Salt helps to speed up the process, while the activated charcoal disperses the heat created from the reaction.
In just 5 minutes, the warmers can reach a temperature of 58 degrees Celcius. The vermiculite acts as an insulator and helps to maintain the temperature for up to 10 hours.
