What is PLA?

PLA stands for polylactic acid. Corn is processed to extract the starch which through further processing is converted into PLA. The PLA used is Natureworks PLA. More information can be found at the manufacturer’s website

Why are we claiming 100% biodegradable?
Both the cup and lid are fully biodegradable under industrial composting conditions.
Why go with industrial compostable and not home compostable?
We wanted a home compostable cup, but there is not one currently available.
If I put the cup and lid in my home composter will it biodegrade?
Probably not, because the temperature and moisture conditions of home composting is likely to be insufficient to biodegrade them. The cup and lid are not certified suitable for home composting.
Will the cups and lid biodegrade in landfill?
Landfill conditions will not be suitable to biodegrade the lids and the PLA lining of the cups.
Does this product contain GMO?
The raw corn used could be from GM or non GMO source, but the processing conditions ensure that the cup and lid do not contain any GMO genetic material.
If the cup and lid use corn sources – does this take corn away from the food chain?
Considerable lessthan 1% of the available US corn goes intoPLA production.
What temperature water should be used?
You can use these cups the same as any other out of home cup. We have tested them and they perform just as well.
How can I ensure the cups go to composting?
Within the UK different council have different policies and recycling resources and schemes. The best thing to do is contact your local authority to check their recycling policy.
These cups can also be recycled through the Save-a-Cup scheme. The cups and lids just need to be collected in Save a Cups special compostable collection sacks. Save-a-Cup has a network of industrial composters around the country to recycle biodegradable cups.
